What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability is all about living in a way that allows you be in harmony with the resources you have. Some resources are renewable, like solar energy and fresh water, while others are not. In order to live sustainably we, as caretakers of this planet, have to take into consideration what resources will not naturally renew themselves within our time of need, and using only what we have now, while still leaving some for the future. The modern function of our society is in many ways unsustainable, but that does not stop us as individuals from making sustainable choices to help us live in harmony with our planet.
Why do you go green?
For me, going green is a form of worship, but also a way I feel comfort in our future. God calls on us to care for the world He created, “throughout the land you hold, you shall provide for the redemption of the land” (Leviticus 25:24). Recycling, volunteering in clean ups, and working with Baylor Sustainability is my way of showing God that I care for the world He put me on. Furthermore, I go green as a way of feeling sure that future generations will be able to see the same beauty in the world that I enjoy.
What has been your experience with Baylor Sustainability?
My experience has been enlightening to say the least. I have learned a lot of ways that sustainability is sought after at Baylor, but I have also learned how it is fought. I have seen people of many different backgrounds and affiliations come together with the common goal of doing good and making a difference. Baylor Sustainability continues introduce me to people that inspire me to continue to make sustainable choices and chase after my dream of helping make the world a better place for the future.
What would you say to other students about going green at Baylor?
Going green does not have to mean you align with a political group. I have been guiding my professional future based on the ideal that sustainability does not have to come from politics. Making little choices to recycle, take shorter showers, and turn out the lights does not mean that you are supporting a political group, it just means you care about your impact on the world.
