Caring for Our Common Home Sustainability Action Plan

The Baylor in Deeds strategic plan prioritizes sustainability through the commitment for Demonstrating Christian Stewardship and integrates strategies related to sustainability across all 4 commitments within the plan.  In response to this, Baylor formed the Sustainability Leadership Committee, with membership appointments from the President's Council. 

President’s Council charged the committee with crafting the vision for Baylor’s holistic contribution to Sustainability, coordinating sustainability work across academic and administrative units, and advising senior leadership on university initiatives for sustainability. Over the course of 2 years, and through coordination between operational, academic, student life, and community partners, the Caring for Our Common Home Sustainability Action Plan details Baylor’s Vision, Goals, and Strategies that bring interdisciplinary expertise and Christian perspective to pressing issues facing the environment and communities.

Baylor University will create structures and processes to facilitate integrative responses to environmental challenges through research, education, and practice.

Baylor University will implement leading sustainability initiatives in campus operations that protect nature and conserve resources while creating opportunities for teaching, learning, and leadership.

Campus Culture

Baylor University will foster a vibrant campus culture where sustainable living is celebrated and contributes to the daily intellectual, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing for all members of the Baylor family.

Local and Global Engagement

Baylor University will nurture local and global partnerships for sustainability that drive progress through research, mutual learning, community-service, fellowship, and shared stewardship.

Committee Meeting Process

Year 1
Throughout the 2024-2025 academic year, the committee drafted and converged on a vision statement, strategic planning priority areas, aspirational goals for each area, and a recommended list of stakeholders to engage in developing strategies, metrics, and actions as part of the next step of this process.
Year 2
The next phase of this important work entails a collaborative process to draft Baylor’s Sustainability Action Plan with strategies for accomplishing Baylor’s sustainability goals, fulfilling Baylor’s sustainability vision, and elevating Baylor In Deeds. Strategies will be developed over the course of the 2025-2026 academic year and the Sustainability Action Plan will be presented to President’s Council during Summer of 2026.
Caring for Our Common Home Sustainability Action Plan
Informed by perspectives across disciplines and guided by Christian Faith, the Caring for Our Common Home Sustainability Action Plan is the guiding document for Baylor’s unique contribution to the field as a Christian, R1 university.
